Caring Deeply and Dropping your Ego with Dr Peter O’Sullivan

This is a great podcast on itunes on a channel called Pain Reframed by Dr Timothy Flynn and Dr Jeff Moore. In this podcast they talk to Dr Peter O’Sullivan who probably needs no introduction in the physio world especially in the low back pain field.

It’s always inspiring to hear from Peter about his experiences with patients and his apporach to the treatment of chronic pain.

I like that in this podcast Peter said something along the lines of “you can’t manipulate a belief”, I’m paraphrasing of course, but this is so true when treating patients with very chronic pain. I remember I had one patient who was suffering from back pain for more than 15 years, and she was just so fearful and anxious and it was really affecting her whole life, socially, relationships etc. And for this patient group, no manual therapy or treatment would have drastically changed her symptoms, it was more of a belief problem. I was an inexperienced therapist then, and now I look back with regret that I was not able to address her problem better, I tried but I did not have the skill set then. It’s certainly not an easy task and it will come with experience, but at least if we addressed the main issue with the patient then only then we will have any hopes of success.

This is definitely an excellent podcast and I would highly recommend that you have a listen to it. Please click here to be linked to the channel page, but you would still have to open it up on itunes to listen to it. It is episode 29. Duration is 35 mins.
